Big Apple Dreams: TieCon 2011

Aimee Lim, Assistant Editor, AsianLife Magazine

New York’s business, entrepreneurial and investment communities will be abuzz with excitement on March 3rd, 2011, at the TieCon Greater New York, which will bring together top entrepreneurs and global business leaders to converge in the world’s investment capital.

Founded in 1992 by a group of successful entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley, TiE (The Indus Entrepreneurs) has grown to become a professional network that is 13,000-members strong, spanning 55 chapters across the globe.  TiE’s yearly conference in Silicon Valley attracts over 3,000 attendees who meet to discuss industry trends and entrepreneurial opportunities, as well as provide a support community and mentorship to rising entrepreneurs.

In two weeks, the Greater New York Chapter of TiE will be hosting a TieCon, which the Conference Co-Chair Milan Mantri hopes will eventually rival the conference of Silicon Valley.

“New York is changing,” Milan noted. “It’s one of the main centers for entrepreneurs starting their businesses, and one of the fastest growing hubs for start-ups now in the country.”

TieCon 2011, which will be held at the Princeton Club, will be led by top entrepreneurs and leading experts in fields such as Digital Media, Cleantech, Social Media and Private Equity.

Fred Wilson, founder of Union Square Ventures, a recognized face in the venture capital community since 1987, and Sanjiv Das, CEO of CitiMortgage, Inc., will be delivering keynotes and providing inspiration for attendees.  With over 20 years experience in venture capitalism, Wilson’s immense investment experience is sure to encourage entrepreneurs and investors alike. Das possesses impressive experience in Citi’s marketing and product development and was general manager of Citibank Consumer Mortgage Group.  Conference speakers will include renowned leaders such as Michele Peluso, CitiGroup CMO and former Travelocity CEO, and Gautam Gandhi, founder of Google News.

While previous TieCons in New York were geared towards bankers and the private equity community, next month’s event will focus on entrepreneurs.  The conference will feature a variety of panels and discussions for both investors and entrepreneurs, bridging the two sides and sharing ideas across the spectrum.

“Entrepreneurs from all walks of life will find something of substance,” Milan said.

Collaboration is one of the defining qualities of TieCon, making it a unique venue for inspiration, idea generation, peer support and mentorship.  This year’s theme, “The Role of Capital in Entrepreneurship,” emphasizes the importance of New York City in today’s capital investment world.  A historically powerful investment community, New York is a key location for rising entrepreneurs.  Milan added that the conference is meant to be a meeting ground for investors and entrepreneurs, and an encouraging springboard for the latter.

“We want the audience to walk away feeling inspired, thinking ‘I want to start a company, and I want to start it tonight.’ I want them to jump on their feet,” said Milan.

Not only will the conference be held in a crucial location, it comes at a momentous time for entrepreneurial growth and creativity.  The topics of the panels and discussions reflect several up-and-coming trends in business and entrepreneurship. One of these trends is the ever-increasing social media network.

The social media panel will be led by Tariq Khan, Founder & President of Global Diversity Marketing, Inc., and will cover issues such as how to build a social media strategy that can facilitate the achievement of organizational goals.  Milan said that conference attendees have the opportunity to soak in the discussions and come away with conclusions about how they want to implement social media tactics.

On February 24th, TiE and NAAMBA will be co-hosting a Networking and Kick-Off Event for TieCon 2011, the NAAMBA Leadership World Tour and the NAAMBA NY Regional Kick-Off.  Attendees are invited to come find out about TiE’s overall mission and upcoming events, as well as NAAMBA Leadership World Tour, during which NAAMBA Founder and President Jino Ahn will travel across the country to promote pan-Asian professional leadership and empower the community. TiE and NAAMBA are excited to be working together to promote leaders and entrepreneurs in a diverse range of industries.

“Members of NAAMBA will find that what TiE is planning really resonates with them,” said Milan. “Both organizations are trying to enhance respective communities in New York and globally. Inspiration is the number one reason they will come to the event.”

Milan emphasized that one of the biggest benefits of joining the TiE family is the quality mentorship available for rising entrepreneurs.  For new ideas and start-up companies, there is nothing like the guidance of someone who can walk you through the steps and prepare you for challenges, according to Milan.

Alongside TiE’s principles of mentorship and networking runs its dedication to partnering with others to contribute to the surrounding community.  TiE of Greater New York is working to become a top resource for the community in various urban projects, said Milan.  TiE’s partners include several New York City-based incubators and entrepreneurial groups.
