China-bashing CNN Sued for $1.3 Billion

Ike

CNN is being sued for $1.3 billion-- $1 for every person in China and Hong Kong-- by a Chinese elementary school teacher and beautician from New York who say Jack Cafferty’s remarks insulted the Chinese people.

For the uninformed, Jack Cafferty said recently that the U.S. imported Chinese “junk with lead paint on them” and continued his tirade by calling the Chinese “basically the same bunch of goons and thugs they’ve been for the last 50 years.”

There seems to be a lot of China-bashing in the news lately by Western media outlets, including reporting on the turmoil in Tibet and botched Beijing Olympic torch relays.  This latest comment by Cafferty has fanned the growing ire of many Chinese, including 14 lawyers who are filing a similar suit against CNN.

Do you think suing CNN for $1.3 billion is going a bit overboard?  And what are your thoughts about the recent bad press China has been getting here in the U.S.?

Would Blacks tolerate this if he said Africans are the same bunch of goons? America is clearly hating on Asians. Asians do more for the economy and outnumber everyone else, but in the US, it's only White, Black, and Latino.

Whats the title of the lawsuit "Freedom of speech will not go unpunished"

Seems to me that people get annoyed about the truth, The guy made his comments under the US freedom of speech laws where unlike China people are allowed to have opinions. Similarly everything that is known about the USA is because of the freedom of information and we do not know the facts about China because it is suppressed.... was it not in China a few years ago that the tanks rolled in because they were having a peaceful protest. As far as the lead covered junk toys are concerned were none of the people making comments aware of the harmful products made (and returned) to China.... and isn't it interesting that while they are telling the Russians they support rogue claims for independence within Georgia they beat and jail people within their own country for having the same views about Tibet..... one other minor point the USA is a democracy.

Sue, sue, sue.....white people in power only understand green, and we have more than enough attorneys who will work pro bono.

The Sharpton/Jackson methods work only for them. Whenever we point out racism, whites--blacks and Hispanics as well--claim that it isn't, and that they should dictate what we should be offended about.

    Money talks; SUE BIGTIME!!!

I think all this China bashing (inferior products and Tibet) is coming up because the US owes China an enormous amount of money - the trade deficit is huge in China's favor. By going after Chinese products maybe a slight dent can be made in those billions.

The West believes that it is superior to all other nations. There is a contempt for people of other races. Therefore, it is probably killing them to see India and China on the ascendant.

As far as I can see, the thugs and goons were originally the British (who from the sixteenth to the twentieth century bled their colonies dry) and now, their American counterparts. Their capacity for manipulativeness, greed and aggression is without limit.

Sue them both. Someone famous or from the press made a racial comments or something negative about another race, particularly African-American and all of the sudden that person is issuing a public apology and/or out of a job. However, nothing seems to be happened to anyone that made rule remarks about any of the Asians race. I am pretty sure that the suit is not about the money but to get the media to notice us and that we are standing up to the media, America and the Western world.

I don't think it's a coincidence that the media has been bashing China lately. I think it has to do with the fact that the Olympics are just around the corner and it is being held in China this year. All eyes will be on China and the U.S., in typical fashion, is trying to draw as much negative, media attention as it can tainting the image of Chinese for a whole new generation. I predicted this two years ago. I knew the U.S. media would try to pull something out of their asses to taint the Chinese people.

I agree with Young Ma that the stament Mr. Cafferty made is his individual comment and has nothing to do with CNN. However, that does not mean Mr. Cafferty has the right to insult and made a demenour statement to the billion of Chinese and Chinese enthnicity around the world. Mr. Cafferty could have criticise the Chinese government (the communist) for the human right issue which I am one hundred percent agree, but instead Mr. Cafferty chose to insult the Chinese people, now that is unacceptable!!!

i would have sue for 1.3 trillion. what makes CNN think they are so high and mighty. Maybe they should learn to read and understand history instead of yeaping off their big mouth like always. it's such a shame american jounalisn have got so low.

"Same bunch of goons and thugs..."? That is interesting because, doesn't America have the highest crime rates than any other country in the world? The amount is not the issue, it is Mr. Cafferty's own judgment that needs to be dealt with first. If CNN told him to say it, then sue away. If it was Cafferty's own opinion, then only he should be dealt with. Its a shame because I watch CNN from time to time, and Cafferty seem very liberal or whatever.
